Music Observation

For the past week I’ve been listening to the XM Radio Internet streams – mostly because of two reasons. One is that I have them and they’re free. The second reason is a bit more involved. It’s mostly because I’ve grown bored of my music collection.

Handy on the DS

I had a little time tonight, and I decided to make a pass at porting Handy to the DS. For those who don’t know, Handy is an Atari Lynx emulator. For those of you who don’t know what an Atari Lynx is, I suggest checking out the wiki (ask your parents first).

Why Do I Torture Myself With C++?

C++ is an amazing tool overall, but for small projects, I find myself wondering why I even bother with it. I’ve always hated the hoops that C++ makes me go through when compared to other languages like Java and Python. One of the biggest annoyances for me is the separate declaration/implementation – I really like being about to define my classes and their functions all in a single file.

Anyway, the reason I’m posting today is this. This original poster in this thread is trying to setup a state machine by using C++ classes. The idea is that the class type would change when the state is changed. But, without going into ugly hacks in C++, you just can’t do it. Unless I’m mistaken, you can’t even do that in Java.

New Toy For The Car

As a late Christmas present, my mom bought an XM Radio for my wife and me.  It came with a gift card that paid for the first 3 months, so it really is a no-risk trial for us.  I have to say that it’s pretty neat so far.

Enough With "Teh Shiny" Already!

I’m looking at you, Apple and Nintendo – and countless other imitators as well.

I’ve had enough with everything having to be shiny these days. The DS Lite being the biggest annoyance for me these days. I would rather have products that don’t look dirty after minutes of normal usage. The MacBook is another big offender in this area as well, along with my wife’s cell phone and of course the iPod. Even computer displays are going shiny – have you ever seen one that’s been used by someone who likes to touch their screen? Ugh…

More Picross DS News

Picross DS BoxA friend of mine (hi Evan!) sent me a link about (Dead Link: Picross DS coming to Europe) on May 11th. This is great news, as it means that a US release might be right around the corner. But, even if the US release never comes, us English speakers can import the European version instead of the Japanese version. Though, I’m not really sure where you go to import European DS games.

Circuit City Doesn't Get It

Looks like Circuit City is trying it’s best to implode – they are laying off 8% of their sales staff. Now, this isn’t the poor performers – it’s the highest paid portion. While this might make sense when you are trying to meet street expectations this quarter, it seems very short sighted when you look at your company’s future. Sure, some of these highest paid employees might not be very good – but I would bet the majority of them are the ones that are actually doing most of the sales for the company. It’s this 8% that is probably a big reason that people actually come back to Circuit City.
