AppleInsider | Time Magazine ranks Motorola Droid above Apple iPhone for 2009

So, the Droid gets the #1 slot by Time… but it’s not like they are business partners with Verizon or anything , so at least it seems it must be just honest journalism.  Oh (Dead Link: wait)…

Actually, it doesn’t annoy me that the iPhone 3GS was fourth on the list – it is basically just a sped up version of the original and 3G iPhone.  It’s a great product, and a worthy successor to the iPhone 3G, but the real innovation comes from the many apps on the app store and, of course, Apple’s original iPhone from 2007.

But Barnes and Noble’s nook made the top 3?  While it’s a pretty neat device, it certainly isn’t that impressive when compared with the competition.  The Kindle has been out for a while now, along with the less impressive Sony e-reader.  This isn’t a groundbreaking device either – it’s basically just B&N’s take on an existing product.

Maybe that’s the real issue with this year is that there doesn’t seem to be any standout products that really deserve the title Gadget of the Year.  Apple fans will say the iPhone 3GS, Android fans will point to the Droid, the Palm fans will point to the Pre, and I’m sure someone (maybe) out there will mention Nokia’s N97 as a device deserving recognition. But in reality, there was very little in the way of groundbreaking gadgets in 2009.

At least we can be happy that the CrunchPad didn’t make this list.  Here’s to hopefully a better round of gadgets in 2010…
